The whole problem with the world is that fools and fanatics are always so certain of themselves, and wiser people are so full of doubts.Bertrand Russell (today’s Calm quote).
Which one am I?
Today’s quote made me stop and wonder. We would all like to think we fall into the wise people category. What makes the difference? I believe it is simply the unwillingness to see another perspective. When we are so passionate and convinced of our “right” we move ourselves into the fools category.
Perhaps this is a fluid move. Perhaps with some things, like religion or politics, our emotion around these topics push us into the fools/fanatics category.
But as leaders, I also believe it is imperative we recognize where we could easily become so wrapped up in our own sense of being right that we fail to serve in the way we can be effective.
So my goal is to recognize where I’m passionate and check to make sure that passion doesn’t become judgement that hinders compassion for others.
